Tis back to school time. indeed. so here's the ol run down. this quarter I'm taking two American lit classes, one medieval lit class, and fucking stats again. I ended up pussing out with my online stats class last quarter, dropping it at the last second... allegedly because I was too far behind, but probably more accurately, I was too scared to take my midterm. It felt unlike me to just give up on it like that, but at the same time it was such a huge relief, and i actually got to enjoy some vacation as a result. So this time I'm taking it on campus, with an actual teacher, when i already learned half of it. So it should go pretty smoothly this time. Other than skool, my life lately has revolved around cats and television. Zsazsi and Lucy are slowly adjusting to Penny. Zsazsi seems to like to watch her play around, much like a grandma watching silly grandchildren. Lucy stares at her bitterly, and needs a lot of reassurance that we still love her. Penny is... how should I explain... uh, RETARDED. She hits her head like 6 times a day, because she is usually doing something stupid like trying to scale the door frame. She also has some bad habits, like rolling in kitty litter like a chinchilla. Shes pretty annoying at night, jumping on our heads and casually swinging her butthole before our noses. but alas, we forgive her, because she is a kitten. and apparently if you are tiny and cute you can be easily forgiven no matter how dumb you are. I can't believe how much that bitch eats considering how small she is! I think shes gonna be fat like Zsazsi. I hope if she does get fat she retains her tiny head. There is nothing cuter than a slightly deformed pet. What else was i gonna talk about, oh yeah, TV. It's like, super fall right now. I have two shows every night, plus ones I've recently downloaded. I'm currently working on Fringe, Pushing Daisies, Always Sunny, True Blood, Sarah Connor Chronicles, ANTM, Project Runway, Worst Week, Heroes, Stuff Happens, and I just downloaded Mad Men. and some upcoming ones I am interested in include The Eleventh Hour, and this new Testees show which I know very little about other than it was advertised in a very teasery kind of way during Sunny. Not to mention the usual Buffys and Angels with my family members three times a week. I consider it all studying though, since I've recently developed a strong desire to be a television writer like Joss. *sigh* Oh, Joss. True Blood is pretty insane. Tim and I are constantly comparing it to Twilight, except for its, you know, REALLY NOT PG. Lots of boobs and blood. Watching it is like watching slasher porn only with great characters and writing. There was even a Buffy shout out. AND a Fiona Apple song playing in the background, "The First Taste" incidentally, a VERY fitting song for such a show. I think Tim is a little scared of the show, but I have much excitedness. Yay for fall! I love drinking chai and wearing tights, and boots, and scarves, and sitting outside writing, and the pumpkin farm, and Halloween, and cider and not having to pay for air conditioning! i dunno, i just kinda feel like posting... so yeah. today ive just been sitting around... doing laundry, watchin movies, having a headache. I guess i went to class today but it was rather uneventful... other than a story my teacher told: he said that when he was in high school everyone would call him "a fucking faggot" and so to show that he didn't care he started wearing a button hung from an earring that said "i love dick" to school. that kinda woke up the class, haha. I have a new strategy with papers at school, which is to ask if i can do something COMPLETELY off topic (usually buffy related). the thing i've realized is that teachers always say yes. I already wrote a paper on Buffy and women's roles on television for my women anthropology class, wrote a paper on Angel about the setting for my Los Angeles in the 80s class, and now I'm going to write one for my film class about Sound. hehehe. this most recent one though is pretty awesome, cuz usually i ask the teachers and they are like, uh... i've never seen it but yeah thats cool... this guy, however, i was like, So would it be ok if i wrote a paper on sound for something that's not on the recommended list? he was like, maybe, like what? i said Buffy the Vampire Slayer, timidly... and he said, oh, which episodes? like the musical episode? i was like I LOVE YOU! hehe. and i mentioned the eps i was thinking of, and he knew what i was talking about and it made me very happy. so yeah im going to have to like put out a book of essays on buffy, i'll have dozens on all sorts of topics in no time. I also asked my brit lit teacher this quarter if i could write a paper on roald dahl short stories, and she made a face... she said, i dont think so, not a children's author. but i told her about his adult stories, and she said ok, as long as i attach copies with my paper. muhaha, she'll be surprised. It seems like being a brit lit teacher she would know about that. i'll have to pick the dirtiest ones just to show her. anyway, i have fulfilled my urge for typing... back to laundry. seriously, summer rules because of gardening. mine this year is doing surprisingly well. i lurvs it. although it is trying to hurt me. timmoo by the vegetable garden, look how tall my fing tomatoes are. most of them have yet to ripen though. the only ones i have tasted so far are the yellow pear tomatoes, omg they taste sooo much better than store bought. rosemary, sad looking lavender, sage, and basil several of which went into some loaves of herb bread i baked that smelled like heaven. lucy sniffing the first and only cocozelle squash i have gotten this year... i hope more appear soon. i chopped this one up and breaded them with panko and herbs and fried em up, served them on top of pasta and tomato sauce. deeericious. i say its trying to hurt me though cuz right now my fingers and forearms are all fucked up from my cukes. today i picked a bunch of green beans and cucumbers and deeeam are the cukes prickly as balls (er... yeah). i got a bunch of little burrs stuck in me and it was unpleasant, but i was so excited to find fat lil cucumbers that i just dove in and at the time ignored the pain. i also pickled today, which always leads to some minor burning. i think its impossible to do without kinda burning yourself. but i got one jar of pickles and one jar of pickled green beans gettin all briney. my kitchen will smell like vinegar for the rest of the summer. ah, i love having my own dirt. (you're keeding me deart!) Current Mood: happy

so it's time for me to buy a million billion books again... it looks like this summer is going to be a lot of reading for me again.. but im glad its mostly novels, several of which i was interested in reading anyway... if anyone has read any of these, lemme know what you thought: The Good Soldier by Ford Madox Ford Less Than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe City of Quartz by Mike Davis White Teeth by Zadie Smith Enduring Love by Ian McEwan To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf (which i "read" last quarter) The History of Forgetting by Norman M. Klein Speaking with the Angel by Nick Hornby The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro so if im hardcore, i'll have my nose in a book all summer... otherwise i'll just bs like i always do. so i mostly am here to talk about tim's and my trip to dragonfly this week, because it was delightful, and probably the last time i will be able to eat out ever again in my life. If you didnt know, Dragonfly is a VERY delicious, expensive, and vegan restaurant on King Avenue. My favorite for special occasions.
we went for a belated birthday type thing, and I actually pretended that the day was my birthday because it was so much better than my actual birthday. Earlier in the day i had gone to class and got a's on papers that i was not expecting to get a's on, so that was good, and during the afternoon i played outside with the kitties, watched some episodes of Angel, and layed on the bed. Tim is working mornings this week so when he got home we headed out and went to strader's where i bought some lavender and some basil for the garden. Then it was off to Dragonfly.
Tim got a white sangria and i got a lavender gimlet to drink (bombay sapphire and lavender infusion) and we checked out the menu. It was nice in there because they were playing a CD that i own, The Dining Rooms, and I normally listen to it when im going to sleep so it made me feel very relaxed and happy. We got some warm bread with a carrot spread which was awesome, and I was afraid that the waiter was going to take it away before I was able to lap up all the stuff on the plate. We ordered soup, which was "Oyster Chowder" without being oyster or chowder. The oyster was for the oyster mushrooms, which there were big bundles of in the soup. It was pretty good. We also got a little taster plate of some kind of mushroom with delicious sun dried tomato sauce and micro greens.
Then we got some smaller 1st course type things for our main course, pistachio pepperjack ravioli (again misleading, remember, no cheese at dragonfly), with tomatoes and capers and all sorts of other things on top, and an asparagus and potato knish with greens on top and grilled rhubarb (which i had never had before outside of strawberry pie), a tasty mustard sauce, and some other delicious sauce too. omg... so wonderful. again we basically licked the plates clean.
then for dessert we got a vanilla/chocolate layer cake with mini bananas foster on top and i think guava sorbet and it was fucking amazing. we also were brought some poached plums or prunes or something that had cinnamon and soy cream and raspberry sauce.
just thinking about it all is torture, i want to be eating it all again right now!

it is the return of the garden! yay! this year, we went a little nuts, but its cool. I just cant wait to make garden pickles, green beans, and this year, even pasta sauce. so heres what we've got planted: Several kinds of tomatoes, including: grape, yellow pear, delicious, beefsteak, and bush champion. (the last three all being pretty much just tomato looking tomatoes) cocozelle squash (looks like stripey zucchini) green beans cucumbers chili peppers then lots of herbage: cilantro dill lemon thyme sage parsley rosemary chives oregano and basil then we planted some foxglove seeds which may or may not grow, some flowering bushes: snowball, and hydrangea azul. so thats a lot of stuff. hopefully the raccoons don't come steal all our tomatoes again this year.
